Carola Café
A remarkable café opened in Írisz House in Sfântu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy) on 29 April 2018. One of the original objectives of the Carola Café was to present the life and extraordinary personality of Baroness Carola Szilvássy. By establishing the cultural café, the aim is to create a homely and relaxed venue with an atmosphere that brings together respect for the past with the modern world, where culture, art and a vital social mission, community-shaping, meet in one place.
The café is, at the same time, an exhibition space. The permanent display provides answers to questions such as: how did the exceptional baroness rescue 72 children from the flames, which silent film did she direct, did she or didn’t she fly over Vérmező with Bleriot, and what was everyday life like as a nurse on the frontline? Thanks to the exhibition we can also find out what sort of music Carola enjoyed listening to and a few of the beauty tips she employed.
As well as this unique exhibition, the café also features other specialities. As a consequence of the job creation programme of the Christian Foundation Diakónia – Írisz House – Work Therapy and Day Care Centre for Disabled Adults, the café also employs people with reduced working capabilities. Through their patronage, guests support the social acceptance and inclusion of the disabled, and there is a chance to gain insight into their everyday activities and lives.
The café regularly organizes cultural and artistic programmes. Visitors will come across fascinating discussions, interactive performances and great film evenings.
